Roger Wayne Marshall, born on August 9, 1960, in El Dorado, Kansas, is a distinguished American physician and politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Kansas since January 3, 2021. His journey from a small-town upbringing to a prominent political figure reflects his dedication to public service, healthcare, and conservative values.

Early Life and Education

Growing up in El Dorado, Kansas, Roger Marshall was immersed in the values of hard work and community service. After graduating from El Dorado High School in 1978, he attended Butler Community College, earning an Associate of Science degree in 1980. He then pursued a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Kansas State University, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1987. During his medical studies, Marshall joined the United States Army Reserve, serving from 1984 to 1991 and attaining the rank of captain.

Medical Career

Following his medical education, Marshall specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, completing his residency at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. He then established a successful medical practice in Great Bend, Kansas, where he delivered more than 5,000 babies over 25 years. Marshall also held leadership roles, serving as chairman of the board of Great Bend Regional Hospital and vice president of Farmers Bank & Trust. His involvement extended to community organizations, including serving as a district governor for Rotary International.

Marshall’s political career began with his election to represent Kansas’s 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016. During his tenure, he was a member of the Republican Study Committee and served on the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Marshall played a role in crafting the 2018 Farm Bill and supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.
