Job Description Summary:
The Department of
Government at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenured position at the
Associate or Full Professor level in international security. Appointment will begin August 10, 2026. We are interested in individuals with
research and teaching expertise in international security. We welcome candidates whose research substantively engages one or more additional
areas, including U.S. foreign policy, diplomacy and statecraft, U.S. national security, and global public health.



Duties include
research, teaching, and service to the University. This is a joint hire between the Department of Government and the Global Research
Institute (GRI). The applicant is expected to maintain a high-impact research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student
body. As part of the hiring offer, the new faculty member will receive a significant startup package that includes flexible research funding
and support from professional staff at GRI, to develop and grow a sustainable research initiative that generates external support.

In
their first year at William & Mary, the new faculty member will have no teaching responsibilities and be fully dedicated to research
development with significant support from GRI. In the second and third years, the new faculty member will teach 1 course per semester,
including a credit-bearing research course in the Government Department that integrates undergraduate students into the faculty member’s
research program. Beginning in the fourth year, the faculty member will transition to a standard faculty position in the Department of
Government with a teaching expectation of 2 courses per semester.

Qualifications:


  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in political science or a related field at the time appointment begins (August
    10, 2026).
  • Demonstrated experience conducting research in international security.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach
    compelling courses in international security and other lecture and seminar-style courses.

Preferred
Qualifications:

  • A record of scholarly achievement commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full
    Professor.
  • Previous experience in teaching and mentoring successful undergraduate research.
  • Experience securing external
    research funding and engaging policy communities.

Conditions of Employment:


  • This position may require additional
    hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs of the
    operation.
