SUMMARY:Stuck: How Money\, Media\, and Violence Prevent Change in Congress
DESCRIPTION:Hear Maya Kornberg explain how campaign costs\, party power\, violence\, and social media fuel dysfunction in Congress—and how we might fix it.\n\n\nWhy hasn’t decades of reform made Congress work better? In her new book\, Stuck\, political scientist and Brennan Center for Justice Senior Fellow Maya Kornberg examines why waves of idealistic\, reform-minded lawmakers—from the post-Watergate class of 1974 to the diverse cohort elected in 2018—have repeatedly found themselves constrained by Congress’s internal dynamics. \nJoin the Goldman School of Public Policy for a conversation with Kornberg about how rising campaign costs\, centralized party power\, political violence\, and the pressures of social media have made Congress increasingly inhospitable to change—and what it might take to fix the dysfunction in our nation’s Capitol. \n \nThis event is part of the Goldman School of Public Policy’s Democracy Book Club series\, which features authors whose work enriches our understanding of democracy by examining the institutions\, policies\, and civic traditions that shape democratic life. \n \n—– \n \nFor disability-related accommodations\, please contact the access coordinator in advance of the event: Elisabeth Mart\, elismart@berkeley.edu

SUMMARY:2026 Wildavsky Lecture: Jens Ludwig
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Wildavsky Lecture will feature Jens Ludwig\, author of Unforgiving Places: The Unexpected Origins of American Gun Violence.\n\n\nThe Aaron Wildavsky Forum for Public Policy was established to honor the Goldman School’s founding dean Aaron Wildavsky’s memory and his contributions to the field of public policy. Over the years\, the Forum has sponsored lectures by impressive researchers and thinkers such as Mary Bassett\, Larry Summers\, William Julius Wilson\, Laura D’Andrea Tyson\, Jim Heckman\, Robert Frank\, and Uwe Reinhardt. \n \nThe 2026 Wildavsky Lecture will feature Jens Ludwig\, author of the 2025 book Unforgiving Places: The Unexpected Origins of American Gun Violence. \nWhat if everything we thought about gun violence was wrong? Economist Jens Ludwig spent nearly two decades on Chicago’s South Side studying why shootings happen—and how they can be prevented. Drawing on immersive fieldwork and decades of research\, Ludwig demonstrates how targeted interventions in the right moments and places can save lives. \n—– \n \nFor disability-related accommodations\, please contact the access coordinator in advance of the event: Elisabeth Mart\, elismart@berkeley.edu

SUMMARY:The Cold War & the Mystery of Anti-Stalinist Intellectual: Josef Guttmann
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk that uncovers the mystery of Josef Guttmann\, a prominent communist dissident.\n\n\nJacques Rupnik’s new book delves into the mystery of Josef Guttmann\, a Marxist intellectual and a leading figure in the Czechoslolvak Communist Party in the early 1930s\, who split with the party over the Soviet Union’s strategy that helped bring Hitler to power in Germany in 1933. A sharp critic of Stalin’s domestic dictatorship and foreign policy\, Guttmann became a prominent Leftwing “dissident” from Communism. After leaving Czechoslovakia at the end of 1938\, he arrived in 1941 in New York\, where he became under different pen names a leading analyst of Soviet-bloc affairs and an uncompromising critic of Communist totalitarianism. The Czech historians who in 1968 helped rehabilitate Guttmann’s name had no idea of what had happened to him after he left the country at the end of 1938 for Sweden. Nor did exiled historians from Czechoslovakia know anything about his fate when they were asked about him in the late 1970’s and early 1980s. Conversely\, U.S. scholars of Soviet affairs and Guttmann’s former colleagues at the Library of Jewish Information of the American Jewish Committee in New York\, where Guttmann worked as a researcher during most of his life in the United States\, had no idea about Guttmann’s role as a member of the Czechoslovak Communist Party leadership in the early 1930’s.
