Marion Michael “Mike” Rounds, born on October 24, 1954, in Huron, South Dakota, is a prominent American politician and businessman currently serving as the junior United States Senator from South Dakota. A member of the Republican Party, Rounds has dedicated much of his life to public service, holding positions such as the 31st Governor of South Dakota and a state senator. Early Life and Education
Mike Rounds was the eldest of 11 children born to Don and Joyce Rounds. His father held various roles in state government, including director of highway safety and executive director of the South Dakota Petroleum Council. The family relocated to Pierre, South Dakota, when Mike was three years old, and he has considered it home ever since. Rounds pursued higher education at South Dakota State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in political science.
Business Career
Before venturing into politics, Rounds established himself in the private sector as a partner in Fischer Rounds & Associates, an insurance and real estate firm with multiple offices across South Dakota. His business acumen provided him with valuable experience in economic and community development, which later influenced his political career.
Political Career
South Dakota State Senate
Rounds began his political journey in 1990 when he was elected to represent District 24 in the South Dakota State Senate. He served from 1991 to 2001, being reelected multiple times. During his tenure, Rounds held leadership positions, including Senate Minority Whip and Senate Majority Leader. His legislative focus encompassed commerce, education, local government, and taxation.
Governor of South Dakota
In 2002, Rounds launched a gubernatorial campaign and secured the Republican nomination. He won the general election and was inaugurated as the 31st Governor of South Dakota on January 7, 2003. Rounds was reelected in 2006, serving until January 8, 2011.
As governor, Rounds prioritized economic development, education, and healthcare. He introduced the 2010 Initiative, aiming to establish research centers at state-supported universities to drive innovation and economic growth. Additionally, Rounds signed legislation restricting abortions in South Dakota, reflecting his conservative stance on social issues.
United States Senate
In 2014, Rounds was elected to the U.S. Senate, succeeding retiring Democrat Tim Johnson. He was reelected in 2020. In the Senate, Rounds serves on several committees, including Armed Services; Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; Veterans’ Affairs; and Environment and Public Works. He has been recognized as one of the top five most effective Republican lawmakers in the 118th Congress, particularly in defense, agriculture, and Indian Affairs issues.

Notably, he introduced the Increasing Transferability of Entitlement to Post-9/11 Educational Assistance Act, allowing survivors of deceased service members to reallocate educational benefits. He also sponsored the Veterans TEST Accessibility Act, facilitating veterans’ access to reimbursement for licensing and certification tests. Additionally, Rounds played a role in adding Purple Heart recipients to the list of veterans eligible for full Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits.
Personal Life
While attending South Dakota State University, Rounds met Jean Vedvei. They married in 1978 and had four children. Jean Rounds passed away on November 2, 2021, after a battle with cancer. Rounds is a practicing Catholic and an active member of various community organizations, including the Elks, Exchange Club, Knights of Columbus, and Ducks Unlimited.
