SUMMARY:Conquering the Datasphere: Assessing the Threat of Chinese Data Collection
DESCRIPTION:IWP MA graduate Laren Reesman will assess the threat\, risk\, and policy options to address Chinese global data collection\n\n\n**This lecture is part of the Student Speaker Series** \nAbout the Lecture: \nThrough engagements like the Digital Silk Road and various state-owned enterprises (SOEs)\, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has succeeded in creating an immense global network for data collection and stores of the world’s data. This capability is unnerving\, but a more serious threat emerges coupled with CCP’s intentions to dominate on the world stage. Direct risk to the US varies depending on how the CCP will learn to process and use this data—whether for economic or coercive advantage. We can assume they would seek both\, but the US knows little about what or how much data has been collected or the advancement of Chinese data learning technologies. Using the international financial system as inspiration\, a model for monitoring\, limiting\, and reporting on global data collection and trading emerges that could provide the transparency needed to prevent China from conquering the datasphere. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nLaren Reesman came to IWP with a B.A. in Intelligence Studies and double minors in French and Anti-Money Laundering from Mercyhurst University in Erie\, Pennsylvania. She has always been interested in public service\, foreign affairs\, and policy. Laren completed her Master of Arts in Statecraft and National Security specializing in Defense at IWP summer of 2024. She has focused on China as a US adversary and hopes to help strengthen the US against Chinese threats. Laren honed her research skills through her time at IWP and is excited to share a relevant and emerging topic with her peers. \nMake a gift to IWP

SUMMARY:Film Screening: JARA - Radioactive Patriarchy: Women of Qazaqstan
DESCRIPTION:By sharing their pain\, six women in the film tell a heart-wrenching testament to the collective pain of millions harmed by nuclear weapons.\n\n\nAmidst the vast steppes and boundless horizon\, Kazakh land bears the scars of devastation and man-made catastrophe. JARA – Radioactive Patriarchy: Women of Qazaqstan is an independent documentary that unearths the tragic legacy of environmental destruction and human suffering caused by 40 years of nuclear testing on Kazakh land. \nThe word “Jara” means “a wound“ in the Kazakh language. Nuclear wounds have spread across millions of things – humans\, animals\, insects\, water\, air\, and soil. Ionizing radiation has cursed millions of people across past\, present\, and future generations. \nThrough this self-exploration and six testimonies from women in nuclear-affected regions\, the film delves into the gendered impact of radiation: state-sponsored and technology-driven gender-based violence\, the social and cultural consequences of technocratic governance\, and militarization. At the same time\, the film highlights women’s roles and their leadership within local communities. \nEvent Speakers: \nAigerim Seitenova: Filmmaker\, Producer\, and Co-Founder of Qazaq Nuclear Frontline CoalitionRochelle Ruthchild: Historian with expertise in women’s and gender studies.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian and Russian Poets Against Russia's War of Aggression
DESCRIPTION:Nemirovskaya will discuss how editors of bilingual anthologies have created a repository of poems protesting against Russia’s war.\n\n\nPoetry written by Russophone Ukrainians\, by recent and long-term expatriates from Russia (and other former Soviet republics)\, and by poets still in the Russian Federation has been collected in numerous publications\, including anthologies such as Yurii Leving’s “Poeziya poslednego vremeni” and the bilingual volumes “Disbelief\, Dislocation\, and Rupture\, “which are the focus of this event. The translators and editors of these bilingual anthologies have created a repository of poems protesting the war and government persecution in Russia and Belarus\, titled Kopilka. From this collection\, group members selected poems for translation and inclusion in anthologies\, with each volume following different principles of selection and organization. These differences reflect the evolution of both the war and the poetry it has inspired over the years. \nEvent Speakers: \nJulia Nemirovskaya\, Poet\, Writer\, and Senior Instructor in Literature\, University of Oregon \nMark Kramer\, Director\, Cold War Studies Project\, Davis Center
