DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk that uncovers the mystery of Josef Guttmann\, a prominent communist dissident.\n\n\nJacques Rupnik’s new book delves into the mystery of Josef Guttmann\, a Marxist intellectual and a leading figure in the Czechoslolvak Communist Party in the early 1930s\, who split with the party over the Soviet Union’s strategy that helped bring Hitler to power in Germany in 1933. A sharp critic of Stalin’s domestic dictatorship and foreign policy\, Guttmann became a prominent Leftwing “dissident” from Communism. After leaving Czechoslovakia at the end of 1938\, he arrived in 1941 in New York\, where he became under different pen names a leading analyst of Soviet-bloc affairs and an uncompromising critic of Communist totalitarianism. The Czech historians who in 1968 helped rehabilitate Guttmann’s name had no idea of what had happened to him after he left the country at the end of 1938 for Sweden. Nor did exiled historians from Czechoslovakia know anything about his fate when they were asked about him in the late 1970’s and early 1980s. Conversely\, U.S. scholars of Soviet affairs and Guttmann’s former colleagues at the Library of Jewish Information of the American Jewish Committee in New York\, where Guttmann worked as a researcher during most of his life in the United States\, had no idea about Guttmann’s role as a member of the Czechoslovak Communist Party leadership in the early 1930’s.

DESCRIPTION:An assessment of the legacy of Julius Margolin\, whose memoir “Journey into the Land of the Zeks” was of the earliest Gulag literature.\n\n\nOne of the earliest important contributions to the corpus of Gulag literature is “Journey into the Land of the Zeks\,” the memoir of Julius Margolin\, a Russian/Polish/Israeli writer who had been imprisoned in Northern Soviet labor camps for five years and\, upon release\, managed to leave the USSR in 1946\, as part of the repatriation of Polish citizens after World War II. Margolin’s book\, long recognized for its literary merit as well as for its testimonial function\, represents the Gulag through the eyes of a liberal Western intellectual. The book’s fate was thorny\, possibly because of what some of the readers perceived as a clash between the author’s protest against labor camps and his concern with (among other issues) specifically Jewish fates. Journey was first published in shortened forms; in full it came out\, in Russian\, French\, Hebrew\, Polish\, and English\, only half a century after the author’s death in 1971. An astonished outsider in the camps\, Margolin remained a partial outsider in Israel\, a Russian intellectual\, recognized and listened to by narrow circles of the audience\, which\, however\, proved to be indomitably faithful. His works\, literary\, journalistic\, and educational are accruing a new relevance and new readership these days.

In this discussion\, we examine instances when Congress has and has not utilized its powers from Appropriations to oversight to assert its authority. We look ahead to the 2026 midterms to consider the factors that will shape the election and how the power dynamics could change depending on the outcome of the election. \nMichele Swers is Professor of American Government at Georgetown University. Dr. Swers’s research encompasses Congress\, Congressional elections\, and Women and Politics. She has written two books about women\, representation\, and policymaking in the House of Representatives\, The Difference Women Make and\, in the Senate\, Women in the Club. She also co-authors the textbook\, Women and Politics: Paths to Power and Political Influence. 5th Edition. Swers’s work on bill sponsorship\, campaign finance\, and Congressional policymaking on women\, children\, and family issues appears in multiple academic journals and book chapters. DESCRIPTION:At Camp United Nations for Girls\, students learn about the work of the UN\, diplomacy and hone their problem-solving skills.\n\n\nCamp United Nations for Girls Salt Lake City 2026 introduces girls to the work of the United Nations and international policy. Camp United Nations begins with a lesson on the history of the United Nations and the organization’s purpose. This is followed by a study of the structure\, leadership\, and the rules of procedure of the United Nations. Each student will be given an assignment to serve as a delegate for a UN Member State. When the General Assembly convenes delegates will propose a resolution. The resolution will be subject to negotiation and amendment by the UN Delegates before a vote on a final version of the resolution. DESCRIPTION:It’s all civics & fun. Girls and boys study government\, run for office\, vote and convene a mock session of Congress to pass a bill.\n\n\nCamp Congress for Youth Palo Alto 2026 is a leadership program that introduces girls and boys to the United States political system. Camp begins with a lesson on the structure of our political system. Each student will choose to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives\, the US Senate or for the presidency.
