SUMMARY:The 21st Anniversary of Marriage Equality: Now What Comes Next?
DESCRIPTION:Join is for a timely anniversary celebration and special screening of the award-winning film “Pursuit of Equality.\n\n\nIt is hard to believe that February 12\, 2025\, marks the 21-year anniversary of when then-San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom sparked a ground-breaking civil rights movement by legalizing same-sex marriage. In doing so\, he not only changed our nation’s views on life\, love and marriage\, but demonstrated the power of how a community can change discriminatory laws in its pursuit for equality. \nJoin is for a timely anniversary celebration and special screening of the award-winning film “Pursuit of Equality.” We will take a look back at the pivotal case as many members of the LGBTQ community enter 2025 questioning if their rights are protected under a new administration. Some are asking what it will take for to continue the fight for equality. \nSPEAKERS \nMabel Tang\, Former San Francisco Assessor-Recorder \nGeoff Callan\, Filmmaker\, “Pursuit of Equality” \nMike Shaw\, Filmmaker\, “Pursuit of Equality” \nMark Leno\, Former California State Assemblymember; Former California State Senator \nKate Kendell\, Former Executive Director\, NCLR \nJeanne Rizzo\, Featured in “Pursuit of Equality” \nPali Cooper\, Featured in “Pursuit of Equality” \nMichelle Meow\, Producer and Host\, “The Michelle Meow Show\,” KPIX+; Member\, Commonwealth Club World Affairs of California Board of Governors—Moderator \n5:30 p.m. doors open & check-in6–7:30 p.m. program\, including short film screening7:30–8:30 p.m. reception(all times PST)

SUMMARY:Book Workshop: Religion and War in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with Ron Hassner on why Middle Eastern states avoid wars of religion & how statehood moderates non-state actors.\n\n\nWhy don’t Middle Eastern states initiate wars of religion? The question may strike you as odd but\, as I will show\, Middle East states do not\, and have not\, launched religiously-motivated wars. Religiously-motivated violence in the Middle East tends to be initiated by non-state actors\, such as terror groups\, secessionist movements\, and national liberation movements. States are often drawn into these conflicts. But when they initiate wars against other states\, they do not do so for religious reasons. This book seeks to explain that pattern by surveying a century and a half of Middle East conflicts. I also hope to show that religiously-motivated non-state actors undergo a process of religious moderation when they assume the responsibilities of statehood. Their religious identities do not disappear\, but their religious ambitions weaken\, are supplemented by nationalist and secular ideological concerns\, and their wars take on new motivations and goals. \nRon Hassner is the Chancellor’s Professor of Political Science and Helen Diller Family Chair in Israel Studies at the University of California Berkeley. He is also the faculty director of the Berkeley Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies. He is editor-in-chief of the journal Security Studies and editor of the Cornell University Press book series “Religion and Conflict.” Prof. Hassner studies the role of ideas\, practices\, and symbols in international security with particular attention to the relationship between religion and violence.

SUMMARY:The Abrahamic Peace Initiative: An Alternative to Conflict and Bloodshed
DESCRIPTION:A faith-inspired response to protracted conflicts in the world\n\n\nAbout the Lecture: \n**This lecture is part of the Intermarium Lecture Series and the Kosciuszko Chair of Polish Studies** \nTo reverse the dangerous and destructive trend towards religion- and ethnic-based conflicts there needs to be a concerted effort to chart a different approach that is rooted in a shared understanding of a common providential purpose for all humanity and animated by a mutual determination on the part of people of faith and goodwill to collaborate in education and action aimed at building a world of sectarian harmony and peace. This is the core purpose of the Abrahamic Peace Initiative (API)\, which recognizes Abraham and his family not only as the origin point of the three great monotheistic religions but also as the central figures tasked with forging a world of goodness based on enlightened hearts and minds working together for the peaceful resolution of conflicts. (API is a project of New America Initiative.) \nAPI believes that this\, and not violent extremism\, is the true purpose of religion and other moral and ethical systems\, and that this peaceful approach is needed around the world today—from America and Europe to Africa\, Asia and the Middle East. It is an approach that can inspire and guide leaders in peace-building and reconciliation relevant to communities of all religious affiliations. The API provides an ideology of inter-religious harmony that can underpin initiatives such as the Abraham Accords and other worthy peace-making efforts. \nThis presentation will also inform the attendees about the Hizmet Movement. Hizmet (meaning “service” in Turkish) is a transnational network of education\, dialogue and humanitarian initiatives. The movement is faith-inspired yet faith-neutral as it welcomes people from all backgrounds. Hizmet’s foundations come from mainline Sunni Islam with a strong component of Islamic spirituality. The movement represents a school of thought that upholds personal devotion\, freedom of expression\, entrepreneurship\, and nonviolence. Hizmet is a significant partner in the Abrahamic Peace Initiative. \n\n\nAbout the Speakers: \nThomas Cromwell is co-founder of the New America Initiative and Chairman of the API. He spent 25 years in the Middle East\, 18 of which as publisher and editor of the Middle East Times. During his time in the region he conducted a series of conferences that brought together Arabs and Israelis\, Greeks\, Turks and Iranians\, to address shared challenges to their societies\, from urbanization and agriculture to education and conflict resolution. He has travelled to 130 countries in the pursuit of understanding and to promote solutions to inter-religious and inter-ethnic conflicts. He has authored several books on these topics\, including The Triumph of Good. \n \nIbrahim Anli is Executive Director of the Rumi Forum and Advisor to API. He was a visiting researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He later joined the Journalists and Writers Foundation (JWF)\, Hizmet Movement’s leading organization based in Turkey\, and led the foundation’s diplomatic outreach as well as its intellectual dialogue programs. Ibrahim taught International Relations and Diplomacy at Tishk International University in Erbil\, Kurdistan before he joined the Rumi Forum in 2019. He holds a BA in Economics and an MA in Conflict Resolution. \nMake a gift to IWP

SUMMARY:Niall Ó Dochartaigh\, "Making Peace in the Shadows"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Making Peace in the Shadows: Back-Channel Negotiation in the Irish Peace Process\,” a lecture by Niall Ó Dochartaigh.\n\n\nSecret back-channels that linked the British and Irish governments to both the IRA and loyalist paramilitaries were crucial to the eventual success of the peace process in Northern Ireland. Secrecy provided a way for longstanding enemies to establish the authority of opposing leaders\, to discuss proposals without making any public commitments and to develop the limited trust on which a settlement could be built\, all the while shielding these tentative efforts from those who did not want the process to succeed. \nDrawing on a rich store of new evidence that has emerged in recent years\, this lecture examines how and why these channels were first established and how they operated. It explores the effects of back-channel contact on intra-party struggles on all sides and discusses the importance of back-channels in drawing the positions of opposing parties closer at crucial moments. It considers too the prominence of former colonial officials in Britain’s ‘covert diplomacy’ in Northern Ireland. \nThe maneuvering that took place during these secret contacts indicates that antagonists were more open to compromise than the often-intransigent public rhetoric suggested and calls into question the view that the conflict persisted for so long because of irreconcilable political ideologies. \nThis lecture draws on this new evidence to challenge some conventional notions about the conflict and offer a fresh analysis of the factors that sustained conflict for so long and that eventually made a peace settlement possible. \nNiall Ó Dochartaigh is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the MA in Public Policy at the University of Galway. He has published extensively on the Northern Ireland conflict and on peace negotiations. His publications include Civil Rights to Armalites: Derry and the birth of the Irish Troubles and the co-edited books Political Violence in Context and Dynamics of Political Change in Ireland. \nHis most recent book\, Deniable Contact: Back-Channel Negotiation in Northern Ireland\, was awarded the Brian Farrell book prize of the Political Studies Association of Ireland and was shortlisted for the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Literary Prize. \nÓ Dochartaigh is currently a Fulbright-Ireland Fellow based at Glucksman Ireland House where he is carrying out research on US civil society peacemaking efforts during the Northern Ireland Troubles.

DESCRIPTION:It’s all civics & fun. Girls and boys study government\, run for office\, vote and convene a mock session of Congress to pass a bill.\n\n\nCamp Congress for Youth Phoenix 2025 is a leadership program that introduces girls and boys to the United States political system. Camp begins with a lesson on the structure of our political system. Each student will choose to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives\, the US Senate or for the presidency. Students will create a campaign with a platform\, campaign finance plan\, and film a political ad. All campers will register to vote and then vote in an election. Once elected to Congress and sworn in\, the newly installed members of Congress will learn how to introduce a bill\, debate the merits of the bill\, lobby fellow legislators\, collaborate with the Executive branch and finally vote on the proposed bill.
