SUMMARY:Can Media Literacy Combat Misinformation?
DESCRIPTION:Misinformation poses significant risks to democracy\, public health\, and social stability. Find out more from Dr. Badrinathan’s Research!\n\n\nMisinformation poses significant risks to democracy\, public health\, and social stability. Since 2016\, numerous media literacy initiatives have been introduced in classrooms worldwide\, with substantial investments aimed at improving misinformation outcomes. But how effective are these efforts? To address this question\, Dr. Badrinathan presents research from a large-scale media literacy initiative in India\, conducted in partnership with a state government agency. A field experiment across 600 classrooms in 583 villages\, involving 13\,500 students\, tested the impact of a four-month curriculum designed to build critical thinking skills\, shift norms\, and improve knowledge about health misinformation among the most vulnerable. As governments seek long-term strategies to combat misinformation\, these findings underscore the potential of sustained\, classroom-based education. \n \nJoin Professor Badrinathan and CAS professor Tom Costello to discuss this important topic! \nApril 18th at 12:00pm \nRoom SIS 300 \nLunch provided \n \nProfessor Badrinathan works on misinformation\, media\, and politics\, with a regional focus on South Asia. Her research spans three substantive areas. (1) Countering misinformation: How can we make citizens more resilient to falsehoods? (2) Accountability for misinformation: How do we hold elites responsible for spreading false information? (3) Impacts of misinformation: What are the political and societal consequences of misinformation on violence\, prejudice\, and quality of democracy?Methodologically\, she relies on field experiments\, original surveys\, and primary data collection. She often collaborate with civil society organizations and government institutions to design projects that evaluate policy impacts and produce actionable evidence. Her latest project involves a long-term randomized controlled trial providing education on misinformation to over 13\,000 schoolchildren across nearly 600 villages in India. \nHer work has appeared in academic journals such as the American Political Science Review (x2) as well as popular press such as The Washington Post. It has also been featured on podcasts such as Scope Conditions and Grand Tamasha\, as well as Indian media outlets like The Hindu\, Scroll\, and Hindustan Times.Prior to SIS\, Professor Badrinathan earned a PhD in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and was a postdoc fellow at the University of Oxford. \n \nThomas Costello is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at American University. He studies where political and social beliefs come from\, how they differ from person to person–and\, ultimately\, why they change–using AI and the tools of personality\, cognitive\, clinical\, and political science. During his doctoral training in clinical psychology at Emory University (2016-2022) and postdoctoral fellowship at MIT (2022-2024)\, he has published dozens of research papers in peer-reviewed outlets\, including Science\, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology\, Psychological Bulletin\, and Trends in Cognitive Sciences. He has been featured in the New York Times\, The Atlantic\, CBC/Radio-Canada\, and Scientific American\, among many others\, and his work has accumulated millions of views and comments on social media. Thomas has garnered extramural grant support (totaling > $500\,000) from organizations including Effective Ventures\, Reset\, and Google. He was awarded the Heritage Dissertation Research Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology\, the JS Tanaka Dissertation Award from the Association for Research in Personality\, and the Klarman Fellowship from Cornell University.

SUMMARY:The Electoral College & How Other Republics Elect Heads of Government
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Michael C. Maibach is a Distinguished Fellow at Save Our States and will speak on the topic of the Electoral College\n\n\nAbout the Lecture: \nThe American Constitution is the world’s oldest. It was designed by our Founders to withstand the storms of faction\, geographic expansion\, war – and even Civil War. The Founders studied history. They knew that democracies always fail. Plato writes in The Republic that “democracies always become tyrannies.” How is it that our 235-year-old Constitution still governs our land? In a phrase – “checks and balances.” The Constitution has internal mechanisms that\, while imperfect\, were created because men are quite imperfect. Just as a sailor must tack back and forth to reach his destination\, the Constitution forces us to share and exchange the levers of power to keep the ship of state from floundering and on course. When someone says\, “The Electoral College is undemocratic\,” a fair reply may be – “Of course it is. We are a republic\, not a democracy.” Even so\, America is much more democratic than most republics in choosing a head of state. Was Mr. Churchill’s name on the ballots of all Englishmen? Was Mr. Trudeau’s name on the votes of all Canadians? Decidedly not. We will explore why virtually all sustained republics embrace “checks and balances” and a “two-step” electoral process – not a simple majority rule. There is nothing simple about self-government. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nMr. Michael C. Maibach is a seasoned professional in global business diplomacy. From 2003 to 2012\, he was the President & CEO of the European-American Business Council after serving for 18 years as the Vice President of Global Government Affairs for the Intel Corporation. Today\, he is a Trustee and Managing Director of the James Wilson Institute\, and a Distinguished Fellow on American Federalism at Save Our States. Mr. Maibach has earned M.A. degrees from Northern Illinois University\, Georgetown University\, Ashland University\, and The Institute of World Politics\, where he also serves as a member of our Honorary Board of Advisors. He frequently speaks at schools and civic groups to discuss and defend the Founders’ Constitution and their Electoral College design. \nMake a gift to IWP

SUMMARY:City of Science: Van Gogh and the End of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Michael Lobel in Conversation with Peter Groffman\n\n\nVincent van Gogh is usually thought of as a painter of nature (sunflowers\, fields\, stars) portraying his direct encounters with a world unspoiled by technology. Michael Lobel challenges this view by showing how Van Gogh’s work is inseparable from the age of industrialization in which he lived — from its factories and polluted skies to its coal mines and gasworks — even drawing on industrial waste for materials. He reveals how Van Gogh engaged with the environmental realities of his time\, forewarning of the threats of climate change and ecological destruction we face today. Lobel\, a professor of Art History at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center\, speaks about this alternative look at Van Gogh with Peter Groffman\, a professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Advanced Science Research Center at the CUNY Graduate Center and at Brooklyn College. \n \nPresented with the Advanced Science Research Center\, the Ph.D. Program in Art History\, and the Center for the Humanities.
