SUMMARY:Camp Congress for Girls DC 2026
DESCRIPTION:It’s all fun & civics at Camp Congress for Girls DC 2026. Young leaders study government\, run for office & pass a bill.\n\n\nCamp Congress for Girls DC 2026 is a leadership program that introduces girls to United States politics. Camp begins with a lesson on the structure of our political system. Each girl will choose to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives\, the US Senate or for the presidency. She will create her own campaign with a platform\, campaign finance plan\, and film a political ad. All campers will register to vote and then vote in an election. Once elected to Congress and sworn in\, the newly installed members of Congress will learn how to introduce a bill\, debate the merits of the bill\, lobby fellow legislators\, collaborate with the Executive branch and finally vote on the proposed bill. Camp will culminate with a ceremonial signing of the bill by our Ms. President. Girl Scouts qualify to earn a Girl Scout badge; badges not provided. \nFor additional information contact us at +1 866-277-2123 extension 1\, via email at info@girlsinpolitics.com or visit our website at www.girlsinpolitics.com. Ticketing options for girls ages 8-11 and 12-17. Please no solicitation emails or calls. We do not book speakers\, book vendors or recruit volunteers for events. \nLooking for more events? SUMMARY:The Race for Governor 2026: Steve Hilton
DESCRIPTION:Come meet the candidate\, hear his vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next governor.\n\n\nAuthor\, entrepreneur\, and Fox News contributor Steve Hilton says he’s running for California governor to address the housing crisis\, high taxes and the “staggering incompetence of Democrat one-party rule.” He’s not embracing the Republican label\, instead calling his campaign nonpartisan. \nBorn in the United Kingdom to Hungarian parents who fled communism\, Hilton worked in politics\, advertising\, and business before becoming head of strategy for former British Prime Minister David Cameron. But he’s probably best known in the United States for hosting the Fox News Channel show “The Next Revolution.” His books include Good Business: Your World Needs You and More Human: Designing a World Where People Come First. \nHilton joins Commonwealth Club World Affairs as part of our “Race for Governor 2026” series of candidate forums. Come meet the candidate\, hear his vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next governor. \nNotes \nAttendees subject to search. No large bags or backpacks. \nSpeakers \nSteve Hilton\, Candidate for California Governor \nModerator: Melissa Caen\, Attorney; Legal and Political Analyst \n11:30 a.m. doors open & check-in12–1 p.m. program(all times Pacific Time) \nPhoto courtesy the speaker. \nCommonwealth Club World Affairs is a public forum. SUMMARY:Reimagining the Future of Global Development
DESCRIPTION:.\n\n\nThe shuttering of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) this year marked the end of an era in global development\, threatening the livelihood of millions of vulnerable people. For decades\, development initiatives resourced by USAID\, as well as many other countries\, helped expand health care\, education\, and economic opportunity worldwide. Despite its flaws\, the system\, which leveraged multilateral institutions and civil society organizations\, worked to alleviate suffering\, reduce poverty\, and save lives. \nYet\, even before USAID’s closure\, this system for development was increasingly under strain and critique. Governments were shifting resources toward hard security as well as disaster response\, from pandemics\, to wars\, to climate catastrophes. At the same time\, multilateral institutions struggled to adapt to new economic and political realities that impacted on development approaches that could not always assure equitable partnership or long-term outcomes. \nWith important gains at risk and lives at stake\, today’s moment calls for a reimagining of the development paradigm. Join Perry World House for a conversation with His Excellency Lord Malloch-Brown\, former UN Deputy Secretary-General\, on what shape the future of development might take – and how the world might do better. \nSpeakers \nMark Malloch-Brown has had a long career in international affairs\, development\, business\, and communications. At the United Nations\, Mark Malloch-Brown led the global promotion of the UN Millennium Development Goals as head of the UN Development Programme (UNDP). At the UNDP\, and previously as vice president of external affairs at the World Bank\, he led reform efforts to increase the impact of both organisations. He later served as Kofi Annan’s chief of staff\, and then as UN Deputy Secretary General\, before joining the British government of Prime Minister Gordon Brown\, as minister responsible for Africa and Asia from 2007 to 2009. Most recently\, he was president of the Open Society Foundations\, the world’s largest private funder of independent groups working for justice\, democratic governance\, and human rights. Mark Malloch-Brown is a Visiting Professor in Practice at the London School of Economics (LSE)\, he was knighted for his contributions to international affairs\, and is currently on leave from the British House of Lords.

SUMMARY:Revolution & Revenge from the 1950s to Now: A Conversation with Paul Starr
DESCRIPTION:Join acclaimed Princeton sociologist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Starr for a discussion on his new book\, American Contradiction.\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Goldman School of Public Policy\, the Institute of Governmental Studies\, the Berkeley Economy & Society Initiative\, and the Berkeley Social Science Matrix. \n \nHow did Americans come to elect Barack Obama—and then Donald Trump? In his new book\, American Contradiction\, acclaimed Princeton sociologist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Starr offers a sweeping account of how we arrived at this moment\, tracing U.S. history from the 1950s to the present. Drawing on the intertwined stories of progressive movements and the powerful reactions they provoked\, Starr explores how struggles over race\, gender\, rights\, and economic inequality have reshaped—and polarized—the nation. \nJoin Starr and GSPP Associate Professor Jake Grumbach for an illuminating discussion of the deep tensions between a rapidly changing people and the institutions that resist that change\, and what this means for the future of American democracy. \n \nThis event is part of the Goldman School of Public Policy’s Democracy Book Club series\, which features authors whose work enriches our understanding of democracy by examining the institutions\, policies\, and civic traditions that shape democratic life. \n \n—– \n \nFor disability-related accommodations\, please contact the access coordinator in advance of the event: Elisabeth Mart\, elismart@berkeley.edu
