SUMMARY:2025 United Nations Youth Commemoration for International Day of Peace
DESCRIPTION:Girls AND boy join us for the 2025 Youth Commemoration for International Day of Peace in New York City at United Nations Headquarters!\n\n\nEvent description: \nThe United Nation’s annual youth commemoration of the International Day of Peace will be held at United Nations Headquarters on Friday\, 12 September 2025\, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. \nThe theme for the 2025 International Day of Peace is: “Act Now for a More Peaceful World.” This theme is a call to action that recognizes young people as agents of change who play a vital role in fostering a culture of peace for all. \nThe United Nations traditionally commemorates this day with the Peace Bell Ceremony\, followed by a youth event. This year\, in lieu of a formal\, large youth event\, students will have the opportunity to engage in intimate roundtable discussions on themes related to Peace and Security\, moderated by influential leaders. Students will also be included in the Peace Bell Ceremony. \nEach student will be asked to propose concrete\, practicable ideas about how they can build and support peace initiatives in their own lives – and be ready to share them at the roundtables. Prompts and general guidance for the presentations will be shared in the coming weeks. We recommend that students begin working on their presentations over the summer\, as the International Day of Peace falls at the very beginning of the 2025–2026 school year. Students’ written proposals\, anonymously or credited\, which may serve as youth inputs for the Secretary-General’s Youth\, Peace\, and Security report in the coming year. \nStudents will all participate in a United Nations tour\, a United Nations briefing and Peacekeeping virtual reality experience. \nSchedule: \n8:30am – Arrival \n8:45am – Proceed through UN Security checkpoint \n9:00am – 12:00pm – Youth Commemoration and Peace Bell Ceremony \n12:00pm – Lunch at Vienna Cafe \n12:45pm to 4:45pm – United Nations tour\, UN Briefing and Peacekeeping virtual reality experience \n5pm – Dismissal \nFor additional information contact us at +1 866-277-2123 extension 1\, via email at info@girlsinpolitics.com or visit our website at www.girlsinpolitics.com. SUMMARY:Making Crisis\, Sovereignty\, and the Environment in Iraq and Kuwait
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our first Pardee Research Seminar of the fall semester\, featuring Arbella Bet-Shlimon.\n\n\nArbella Bet-Shlimon\, Associate Professor of History at the University of Washington\, will be presenting on research that considers how imperialism\, anticolonialism\, and the contradictions of sovereignty in twentieth-century Iraq and Kuwait are reflected in environmental concerns. She illustrates how a state of crisis between the two countries historically occurred at the nexus of resource extraction and consciousness of climate anomalies (now understood as climate change). Viewing this issue through the problem of freshwater access helps us understand the different\, and conflicting\, ways that formerly colonized people articulate their aspirations for liberation amid imperial intervention.

SUMMARY:From Tariffs to WTO Reform: The Next Era of Global Commerce
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Sir Conor Burns to discuss the future of global commerce.\n\n\nGlobal trade is entering a period of transition as governments revisit tariffs\, adopt new non-tariff measures and weigh reforms to international institutions. These shifts raise important questions about how the United States and its partners can adapt to a more competitive and multipolar world. \nOn Sept. 16\, former U.K. trade policy at the Department for International Trade\, Sir Conor Burns\, will join Ambassador David Satterfield for a discussion on the changing landscape of global trade. The conversation will address the renewed use of tariffs compared with other trade measures\, prospects for reforming the World Trade Organization\, and the long-term implications of the current U.S. trade approach.. They will also consider how the global trading system may evolve as U.S. economic influence adjusts to a changing international landscape. This event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Role of Media in National Security
DESCRIPTION:With media’s role being to provide transparency to the public\, how can that be balanced with the opposed tenets of national security?\n\n\nAbout the Lecture: \nExploring the role of media in national security and how coverage can both positively and negatively impact the public’s perception of the work performed. In a world where transparency equals trust\, the lecture will examine how to navigate the seemingly opposed priorities of transparency and national security. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nJenny Burke is a professional communicator with a career spanning national security\, border security\, public safety\, and technology for more than 25 years. For the last 19 years\, she has worked in public affairs across the Department of Homeland Security. \nWith a background in technology communications in the private sector\, Ms. Burke was recruited by the newly established Department of Homeland Security in 2006 to help the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office – currently the Office of Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction – establish its communications office. This work led directly to U.S. Customs and Border Protection as the agency deployed radiation detection monitors to ports of entry across the country. \nMs. Burke spent ten years at CBP working with national security\, technology\, trade\, and travel topics. She became the agency’s first-ever press secretary in 2014 working directly for the Commissioner with high-profile topics such as use of force and the unaccompanied child migration crisis. \nIn the years following CBP\, Ms. Burke worked with several components with DHS. She ran the public affairs office at the DHS headquarters during the transition between the Obama and Trump administrations in 2017. She served the Federal Emergency Management Agency as press secretary in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. She also served as the press secretary for the Transportation Security Administration and at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement where she was also the senior career official in the Office of Public Affairs.
