SUMMARY:Kitty Stryker on Sustaining Your Activism: Standing Up Without Falling Down
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 27\, meet others interested in activism\, and maybe even have dinner afterward at a nearby restaurant!\n\n\nBalancing activism with personal life and relationships can be difficult. At this crucial time in our history\, activists are burning out when we need them the most. That’s why this event with Kitty Stryker\, who has spent two decades as a direct activist and a street medic during radical actions\, is so timely. \nStryker\, author of Love Rebels: How I Learned to Burn It Down Without Burning Out\, has both burned it down and burned herself out. Trying to “show up bravely” as a leader despite exhaustion\, she almost destroyed herself. \nBut now she says\, “Activism does not demand martyrdom to be effective … it’s important to have some fun together!” She’ll show us how to build effective teams composed of people with different backgrounds\, interests\, and abilities\, while managing the inevitable internal conflicts. She will discuss how to inspire powerful action while keeping the team safe\, how to nurture yourself and others while staying in the fight\, how to make your most effective contribution\, and how to decide when you truly need to take a break. \nSo join us on January 27\, meet others interested in activism\, and maybe even have dinner afterward at a nearby restaurant! \nAbout the Speaker \nKitty Stryker is the author of Love Rebels: How I Learned to Burn It Down Without Burning Out\, three books on consent\, and articles about activism and politics. She founded the Ladies High Tea and Pornography Society in London and has been a radical activist since she was ten. \nSPEAKERS \nKitty Stryker\, Author\, Love Rebels: How I Learned to Burn It Down Without Burning Out \nModerator: Eric Siegel\, Chair\, Personal Growth Member-led Forum\, Commonwealth Club World Affairs of California \n5 p.m. doors open\, check-in & reception5:30–6:30 p.m program6:30 p.m. discussion & book signing(all times Pacific Time) \nPhoto by Avens O’Brien; courtesy the speaker.

SUMMARY:Hopes\, Fault Lines\, and the Work Ahead in 2026
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Political Dynamics in 2026\n\n\nAs we look toward 2026\, many of us feel a mix of hope\, concern\, determination\, and fatigue. In Minnesota\, the year ahead will be especially momentous. As the midterm election approaches\, Minnesotans will elect a new governor\, and every seat in the state legislature will be on the ballot. \nDecisions made in 2026 will shape the direction of our state for years to come. The questions before us aren’t just what do I believe? but also how do I want to show up as a citizen during a consequential political moment? \nJoin Braver Angels for a thoughtful\, respectful 90-minute conversation where Minnesotans from across the political spectrum reflect together on the road ahead. This is not a debate or a campaign event—it’s a chance to listen\, be heard\, and think clearly about what matters most as our state enters a pivotal election year. \nWhat we’ll explore together:* Your hopes and concerns for 2026 — What gives you optimism about Minnesota’s future? What worries you as major elections approach?* The issues that matter most to you right now — Which state or national issues feel mosturgent—and why?* How you want to engage in a high-stakes year — Do you feel called to help reducepolarization and strengthen relationships in your community? Or to advance your politicalbeliefs through ethical\, constructive civic action? (Many of us feel drawn to both.)* Your ideas for 2026 conversations in the East Metro Alliance — What topics should BraverAngels in Minnesota be creating space for as we head into this election year? \nYou don’t need to be an expert\, an activist\, or even particularly optimistic. You just need to be willing to speak honestly\, listen generously\, and stay curious. As Minnesota approaches a defining political moment\, let’s practice how to engage well—together. \nEnter the high school at the door by the flag pole. A parking lot is adjacent to the building. The media center is on the second floor. An elevator is located to the left in the hallway just after entering the building. \n*Tickets are Free\, Donations Help Use promo code BRAVER during registration to get a free ticket. SUMMARY:The Race for Governor 2026: Betty Yee
DESCRIPTION:Come meet the candidate\, hear her vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next Governor.\n\n\nAs former state controller and budget director\, Betty Yee oversaw California’s finances—drawing on skills she first developed as a child helping run her family’s small business. Today\, she says she’s running for California governor to address the affordability crisis while bringing more transparent\, effective governance to Sacramento. \nYee grew up in San Francisco\, the daughter of Chinese immigrants who ran a dry cleaning shop. She worked her way through UC Berkeley and earned a master’s degree from Golden Gate University\, all while caring for her father during his illness—an experience she says shaped her views on health-care access. \nWhile serving as the top budget official under Governor Gray Davis\, she pushed for wage protections for home healthcare workers and helped implement California’s pioneering automobile emissions standards. During her two terms as controller\, Yee says she identified billions in wasteful government spending\, safeguarded pension funds for public employees and teachers\, and resisted federal attempts to open protected coastal areas to oil exploration. \nYee joins Commonwealth Club World Affairs as part of our “Race for Governor 2026” series of candidate forums. Come meet the candidate\, hear her vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next Governor. \nNotes \nAttendees subject to search. No large bags or backpacks. \nSPEAKERS \nBetty Yee\, Candidate for California Governor \nModerator: Melissa Caen\, Attorney; Legal and Political Analyst \n11:30 a.m. doors open & check-in12–1 p.m. program(all times Pacific Time) \nPhoto courtesy the speaker. \nCommonwealth Club World Affairs is a public forum. SUMMARY:Shadi Hamid: The Case for American Power
DESCRIPTION:Hamid says that America\, as a democracy\, has the ability to correct past mistakes and change for the better—and that part is up to all of us\n\n\nIs the United States still the “indispensable nation\,” former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s term to describe America’s leading role in the world? Or is the world better off as the country turns inward and downplays its historic alliances? \nWashington Post columnist Shari Hamid has made his own journey\, moving from opposition to America’s role in the world to reluctantly embracing it. He says the alternative to American leadership isn’t a morally perfect superpower—it’s the brutal authoritarianism of countries like China and Russia. He explores this topic in his new book The Case for American Power\, and he comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to make the case for America to embrace its power as the only moral option in a world beset by tragedy. \nDrawing on his unique perspective as both an American and a Muslim who came of age in the shadow of the September 11 attacks\, Hamid contends with the contradictions of American power: how a nation founded on moral purpose so often does not live up to its ideals. He also deals with America’s failures\, from the war in Iraq to support for authoritarian regimes across the Middle East. But he says that because America is a democracy\, it has the ability to correct past mistakes and change for the better—and that part is up to all of us. \nSPEAKERS \nShadi Hamid\, Columnist\, The Washington Post; Author\, The Case for American Power \nIn conversation with Steven Saum\, Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Content\, Saint Mary’s College \n5:30 p.m. doors open & check-in6–7 p.m. program7 p.m. book signing(all times Pacific Time) \nPhoto by Paul Morigi; courtesy the speaker.

SUMMARY:Emily Feng: Identity and Belonging in Xi Jinping's China
DESCRIPTION:Feng reveals dramatic human stories of resistance & survival in a country that is increasingly closing itself off to the world.\n\n\nChina’s president\, Xi Jinping\, has become the most all-powerful leader of the communist state since Mao\, and his grip on the country has been strengthened by technology and China’s growing economic and military might. The United States might have belatedly realized it was in a great-powers competition with the People’s Republic\, but we might still be failing to understand how Chinese people themselves are dealing with—and resisting—their authoritarian government. \nAward-winning journalist Emily Feng\, author of the new book Let Only Red Flowers Bloom\, has documented China’s state oppression of those who fail to conform to Xi Jinping’s definition of who is “Chinese.” She has profiled nearly two dozen people who are pushing back. They include a Uyghur family\, separated as China detains hundreds of thousands of their fellow Uyghurs in camps; human rights lawyers fighting to defend civil liberties in the face of incredible odds; a teacher from Inner Mongolia forced to make hard choices because of his support of his mother tongue; and a Hong Kong fugitive trying to find a new home and live in freedom. \nJoin us as Feng reveals dramatic human stories of resistance and survival in a country that is increasingly closing itself off to the world—even as it flexes its muscles on the world stage. Feng illustrates what it is like to run against the grain in China\, and the myriad ways people are trying to survive\, with dignity. \nSPEAKERS \nEmily Feng\, International Correspondent for NPR; Author\, Let Only Red Flowers Bloom: Identity and Belonging in Xi Jinping’s China \nModerator TBA \n5 p.m. doors open & check-in5:30–6:30 p.m. program6:30 p.m. book signing(all times Pacific Time) \nPhoto by An Rong Xu; courtesy the speaker.

SUMMARY:New Weapons\, Old Debates: A History of Weapons Prohibitions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for New Weapons\, Old Debates: A History of Weapons Prohibitions in International Law\, 1868–Present!\n\n\nIn 1868\, military experts representing seventeen states gathered at the Russian War Ministry in St. Petersburg to prohibit the use of explosive bullets under international law. This event marked the beginning of debates about the relationship between the weapons of industrial modernity and humanity in war. From 1868 to 1939\, contestations over the legality of expanding bullets\, airships and bombing\, gas and bacteriological weapons\, tanks\, railway guns\, and submarines extended beyond diplomatic practice and legal scholarship to journalists\, novelists\, surgeons\, scientists\, and everyday people. During this period\, three intellectual traditions crystallized. Techno-utopians argued that ever more destructive weaponry would make war impossible. Techno-optimists suggested that the introduction of new armaments would make wars shorter or more humane. Techno-pessimists\, finally\, called for the prohibition of some new weapons by warning about their catastrophic effects\, ranging from the infliction of unnecessary suffering to the end of Western ‘civilization’ and even of humanity itself. At a moment of debates about the legality of lethal autonomous weapons systems and nuclear weapons\, this talk will situate present-day contestations in a history that is as old as industrial modernity itself.

SUMMARY:The Race for Governor 2026: Xavier Becerra
DESCRIPTION:Come meet the candidate\, hear his vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next governor.\n\n\nFormer California attorney general and U.S. health secretary Xavier Becerra says this is a “break-glass moment” for state residents who are struggling economically. That’s why\, he says\, he’s making economic opportunity the centerpiece of his campaign to succeed Gavin Newsom in the governor’s office. \nRaised in Sacramento by immigrant parents—his father worked in construction\, his mother was a clerical worker—Becerra was the first in his family to earn a college degree. He attended Stanford for both undergraduate and law school\, thanks in part to opportunities he says were once more widely available in California. \nIf elected\, Becerra says he would be the “health-care governor\,” an issue he has emphasized throughout his career\, from his 24 years in Congress to his time in the Biden administration. He also points to his track record as attorney general standing up to the Trump administration on issues such as immigration and the environment. \nBecerra joins Commonwealth Club World Affairs as part of our “Race for Governor 2026” series of candidate forums. Come meet the candidate\, hear his vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next governor. \nNotes \nAttendees subject to search. SUMMARY:Book Lecture: The Israeli
DESCRIPTION:Author Phil Kurata joins Dr. Ritchie to discuss The Israeli\, a novel reimagining spy Eli Cohen in the post-WWII Middle East.\n\n\nAbout the Lecture: \nThe Israeli\, a novel by veteran journalist Phil Kurata\, is set in the years 1947 to 1965\, after the end of World War II\, when in the Middle East\, newly independent countries were shaking off the colonial powers of Britain and France. It reimagines the life of famed spy Eli Cohen. Beginning in Alexandria\, Egypt\, it transitions to a nascent Israel and then to Syria\, where Cohen spies for the Israelis. Steeped in the food and the culture of the Middle East at that formative period\, it takes a hard-eyed view of racism and prejudice on both the Israeli and Arab sides. It takes the reader on a deep dive into the intractable and often vicious conflicts that split the region today. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nPhillip Kurata is a novelist and former journalist who grew up in Lawrence\, Kansas\, and earned a bachelor’s degree in French literature and a master’s degree in Asian Studies from the University of Kansas. He studied at the University of Tunis in the mid-1960s\, and—as a fluent French speaker—he returned to Tunisia as a Peace Corps Volunteer and a public health educator. He got into journalism while studying Chinese in Taiwan\, writing for the Far Eastern Economic Review. He later worked for United Press International\, Agence France Presse and Voice of America in Japan\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Beijing\, France\, and Washington\, DC. \nPhil served for many years as a writer with the U.S. Department of State\, based in Washington\, DC. \nHis first novel\, The Reluctant Agent\, was published by Washington Writers’ Publishing House as the Fiction Prize winner. His most recent novel\, The Israeli\, published in 2024\, is a fictionalized story of the legendary Israeli spy\, Eli Cohen\, and examines the destructive power of ethnic hatred. \n \nDr. Elspeth Cameron Ritchie is a forensic psychiatrist with special expertise in military and veterans’ issues. She has been Chief of Psychiatry at Medstar Washington Hospital Center since 2018. She retired from the Army in 2010\, after holding numerous leadership positions within Army Medicine\, including Psychiatry Consultant. She is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences\, Georgetown University\, and George Washington University School of Medicine. An internationally recognized expert\, she brings a unique public health approach to the management of disasters and combating mental health issues.
