DESCRIPTION:Artist\, organizer\, researcher\, and director Emilia Yang will offer strategies for decolonizing participatory art\, design and witnessing.\n\n\nPart of the 2024-25 ReMemory: Experiments in Listening\, Authorship and Knowledge-Keeping Series: \nAltars Archives: Strategies for Decolonizing Participatory Art\, Design and Witnessing  \nDrawing on my experience as a victim/survivor\, activist for memory\, artist\, designer\, and researcher\, I will share the process of creating AMA y No Olvida\, Memory Museum Against Impunity. This memory initiative was made in collaboration with the Association Mothers of April (AMA)\, a collective of families of victims of state violence organized in a context of authoritarian and brutal repression in Nicaragua. This endeavor was informed by the families’ use of altars as technologies of remembrance and connection to the spiritual realm to share our individual pain with a broader community. Through this example\, I will share strategies for decolonizing participatory art\, design\, and witnessing through embodied practices. \nEmilia Yang (She/her/hers/ella) is an artist\, designer\, organizer\, researcher\, and director of “AMA y No Olvida\, Museum of Memory against Impunity” from Nicaragua. Her art practice utilizes expanded forms of expanded media for the creation of community-based feminist\, anti-racist\, and transformative justice projects and futures.  \nHer artworks have been exhibited in international spaces such as the Resistance Biennial in Guatemala\, the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica\, the Museum of Jade and Pre-Columbian Culture in Costa Rica\, Casa América and the Museum and Vanguard Art Center Neomudéjar in Spain\, Le Commun Contemporary Art Building in Geneva\, and the Games and the New Media Summit at Tribeca Film Festival.  \nShe has been the recipient of multiple fellowships\, including the Arts for Gender Equality Fellowship by the Rockefeller Foundation and CARE USA in 2023 and the Hunting Family Faculty Fellow at U-M Institute of the Humanities in 2024. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Art and Design at the University of Michigan’s Penny W. (Reg. is for planning and not required.)\n\n\nOn March 7\, 2025\, we rally to defend science as a public good and pillar of social\, political\, and economic progress.  \nWe call on policymakers\, institutions\, and the scientific community to uphold the integrity of science\, protect its accessibility\, and ensure its benefits serve all people. To achieve this\, we seek the following policy actions. \n1. Secure and Expand Scientific Funding \nPublicly funded science drives innovation\, strengthens the economy\, and improves lives. We demand: \nRestoration of Federal Research Funding: Reinstate federal funding for scientific research across all disciplines to FY-2024 levels and commit a 20% increase in federal scientific funding over the next three years followed by annual increases indexed to inflation to ensure sustained scientific advancement.  \nReinstatement of Wrongfully Dismissed Federal Employees: Rehire all unlawfully terminated scientists and administrators at federal agencies (including NSF\, NIH\, CDC\, EPA\, NOAA\, NPS\, NWS\, FWS\, and FDA) with full back pay and benefits. \nRemoval of  the 15% cap on indirect funding for NIH-funded grants and reinstatement of indirect funding policies as they existed prior to January 1\, 2025.  \n2. End Censorship and Political Interference in Science \nScience thrives on open inquiry and evidence-based decision-making. We demand: \nAn End to Government Censorship: Prohibit all forms of political censorship in scientific research\, including restrictions on the topics of scientific research that are eligible for federal funding. \nRestoration of Public Access to Scientific Information: Restore all scientific data\, reports\, and resources on federal websites to pre-January 31st\, 2025 status\, ensuring full public access to primary scientific sources.  \nProtection of Research Independence: Mandate legal safeguards against political interference to preserve the integrity of federal research and communication. \nA Commitment to Freedom of Scientific Expression: Protect scientists’ rights to communicate their findings freely\, without fear of retaliation or suppression. \n3. Defend Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Accessibility in Science \nScience is strongest when it includes everyone. Attacks on DEIA initiatives are attacks on science itself.  We demand: \nPreservation of Equitable Access to STEM: Maintain and expand federal programs that broaden participation in STEM training and careers. \nProtection for Minoritized Scientists: Enforce anti-discrimination protections for minoritized scientists to ensure equitable participation and impact. \nReinstatement of DEIA Initiatives: Restore all DEIA programs within federal agencies to pre-January 1\, 2025 status\, ensuring continued progress toward equity. \nScience is for everyone. Science keeps us safe\, and enables us to live longer\, healthier lives. We call on leaders at every level\, regardless of political affiliation\, to champion and protect scientific research\, education\, and communication—for the progress\, prosperity\, and well-being of all.

Camp will culminate with the girls convening a Congress and passing their own bill. All girls will serve as members of Congress. Young leaders study government\, run for office & pass a bill.\n\n\nCamp Congress for Girls New Haven 2025 is a leadership program that introduces girls to U.S. politics. Camp begins with a lesson on the structure of our political system. Each girl will choose to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives\, the US Senate or for the presidency.
