SUMMARY:Eastern Europe at a Crossroads: A Conversation with Mr. Landsbergis
DESCRIPTION:Join former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania\, Mr. Landsbergis\, and Davis Center Executive Director Solnick for a conversation.\n\n\nThe war in Ukraine is entering its fourth year. Despite enormous challenges\, Ukraine has not been defeated—developing new weapons\, strategies\, and resilience in the face of unrelenting attacks. At the same time\, Russia is escalating its reach – with drone operations extending deeper into Eastern Europe – raising urgent questions about the security of the region and the readiness and commitment of NATO allies. Some observers note unsettling parallels between Europe in 1939 and Europe in 2025. \nJoin former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis and Davis Center Executive Director Steven Solnick for a wide-ranging conversation about the looming threat from Russia\, the current state of NATO\, recent security breaches in the Baltic States\, Poland\, and Denmark\, and what these developments mean for the region’s future. Together\, they will explore whether Europe is being inexorably drawn toward a broader global conflict—or whether there is still a path to avoid it.

SUMMARY:Joni Sue Lane Lecture Series: A Conversation with Dr. France Cordova
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation regarding funding trends and policy shifts — and what it means for the future of research and innovation.\n\n\nScience in the U.S. is at a pivotal moment. With major federal agencies facing steep budget cuts\, researchers across the country are grappling with shrinking resources\, stalled projects\, and growing uncertainty. \nAt the inaugural installment of the Joni Sue Lane Lecture Series on Women in Science and Technology\, Dr. France Córdova\, president of the Science Philanthropy Alliance and former director of the US National Science Foundation (NSF)\, will give a keynote lecture on science\, science funding\, and the importance of fundamental research as well as her journey as a physicist. This lecture will take a closer look at where things stand — from funding trends to policy shifts — and what it all means for the future of research and innovation. \nThe Joni Sue Lane Lecture Series aims to recognize and amplify the vital contributions of women in science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics. It’s named in honor Joni Lane\, a talented systems programmer\, who worked at the Federal Aviation Agency and Rice University in the early days of computing. The Joni Sue Lane Lecture Series\, funded by the Lane Family Endowment\, is a part of the Baker Institute Civic Scientist Lecture Series\, sponsored by Dr. Virginia Clark\, with additional support from Benjamin and Winifer Cheng\, Rice University’s George R. Brown School of Engineering and Weiss School of Natural Sciences. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Gender and Energy Security in Socialist Czechoslovakia
DESCRIPTION:Join Julia Mead (Harvard University) for “The Allure of the Gas Stove: Gender and Energy Security in Socialist Czechoslovakia.”\n\n\nIn the twentieth century\, Czechoslovakia had one of the highest per capita coal production rates in the world. During the socialist period\, this fossil bounty formed the base of the country’s economy\, and coal fueled everything from motorcycles to steel mills. From the 1960s on\, however\, Czechoslovakia became increasingly entangled in the global petroleum trade\, thanks to the construction of pipelines that delivered oil and gas from the Soviet Union. After the global energy crises of the 1970s\, Czechoslovak planners tried to return to an energy independent\, coal-only economy\, but they found that their citizens’ consumer desires had become inextricably entwined with oil and gas. Zooming in to the level of the household reveals that these consumer desires had a distinct gendered dimension: many women favored gas stoves and heaters for their convenience\, while their husbands\, fathers\, and brothers favored coal for the independence they felt it gave their family and their country. This talk uses conflicts over the gas stove (and water heater and furnace) to illuminate the affective\, practical\, and gendered elements of energy security.

SUMMARY:The Triumph of Economic Freedom With Former Senator Phil Gramm
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion and book signing with Former Senator Phil Gramm\n\n\nWhat if much of what we think we know about capitalism is wrong? From the Industrial Revolution to the 2008 financial crisis\, debates over the roles of markets and government have shaped American history. But separating fact from myth has never been easy. \nFormer U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm will join John Diamond for an armchair conversation on “The Triumph of Economic Freedom: Debunking the Seven Great Myths of American Capitalism” (Bloomsbury\, 2025)\, co-authored with economist Donald J. Boudreaux. The book argues capitalism has driven rising incomes\, improved health and expanded opportunity since the Industrial Revolution. At key moments in U.S. history — the Progressive Era\, the Great Depression and the Great Recession — Gramm and Boudreaux contend that government control often weakened the freedoms that fuel prosperity. \nUsing a data-driven approach\, the authors challenge common beliefs: that the Industrial Revolution impoverished workers\, the New Deal saved capitalism\, trade hollowed out manufacturing\, deregulation triggered the financial crisis and inequality reflects systemic failure. \nA book signing with Gramm will follow. Copies of “The Triumph of Economic Freedom” (Bloomsbury\, 2025) will be available for purchase. This Director’s Lecture Series is co-sponsored by the Baker Institute Center for Tax and Budget Policy. It is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Triumph of Economic Freedom: With Former Senator Phil Gramm
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion and book signing with Former Senator Phil Gramm\n\n\nWhat if much of what we think we know about capitalism is wrong?
