SUMMARY:Repatriation of North Korean Refugees Escaping Through Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:IWP Master’s candidate Peace Ajirotutu will discuss the human rights issues North Korean refugees face when seeking asylum\n\n\nThis lecture is part of the Student Speaker Series \nAbout the Lecture: \nThe Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)\, also known as North Korea\, has one of the worst human rights records in the world\, leading many of its citizens to escape through nearby Southeast Asian countries to seek asylum in South Korea or other willing nations. A significant issue these escapees face is having an ambiguous United Nations (UN) refugee status and the fear of forced repatriation\, also known as refoulement. The countries of China\, Laos\, Vietnam\, and Thailand are the most used Southeast Asian escape routes for North Korean refugees. This lecture seeks to solidify North Korean escapee’s status as refugees\, explain the status of Southeast Asian countries’ relationship with North Korea and their history of forced repatriation\, and proposes a UN General Assembly Human Rights Council Resolution that creates an international body called “The Committee on the Resettlement of North Korean Refugees\,” which shall encourage Southeast Asian countries not to repatriate them and coordinate the removal of these refugees from Southeast Asia to be resettled in South Korea or other willing nations. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nPeace Ajirotutu is a Master of Arts candidate at the Institute of World Politics\, pursuing a Masters in Statecraft and International Affairs with a concentration in Asian regional area studies. Before attending IWP\, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke\, Summa Cum Laude\, with a major in Political Science and a double minor in History and Asian Studies. Peace is currently an editorial intern at the Jamestown Foundations China Brief publication. She has previously presented research on North Korea at the 2024 Intelligence Studies Consortium’s Symposium. Peace specializes in the regions of China\, North Korea\, South Korea\, and Taiwan. \nMake a gift to IWP

SUMMARY:Trade in the Political Crosshairs SIS Conference: Europe and Africa
DESCRIPTION:In this conference we will explore the challenges that businesses are likely to face in the coming years. Free and open to the public.\n\n\nTrade\, today\, is dominating headlines once again. How will Europe and Africa be affected? More importantly\, how will they respond? \nAs the second Trump administration takes shape\, trade policy is once again at the forefront of global economic discussions. Many of the disruptive policies from Trump’s first term are being amplified\, expanding their reach to both geopolitical rivals and key allies. While the Biden administration prioritized strategic coordination with allies and the protection of key industries\, it largely avoided traditional market access negotiations. Now\, Trump’s second-term trade agenda is broader\, more aggressive\, and poised to reshape global economic relationships. \nThis half-day conference will explore these critical trade developments. AU Professor Robert Koopman will open with an in-depth update on global trade flows and policies\, providing economic insights into their potential effects. The discussion will then continue with two expert panels examining how Europe and Africa are adapting to the evolving geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape. Panelists will discuss what businesses and governments anticipate in the coming months and how they are approaching global cooperation and integration in this shifting environment. \n \nKeynote Speaker \nRobert Koopman\, AU-SIS Hurst Senior Professorial Lecturer and Editor-in-Chief of the Global Value Chain Development Report\, 2025 \nPanelists \nDan Mullaney\, Non-Resident Senior Fellow\, Atlantic Council \nMichelangelo Margherita\, Head of Trade and Agriculture Section in Washington\, European Union \nTiffany Smith\, Vice President for Global Trade Policy\, National Foreign Trade Council \nFlorie Liser\, President and CEO\, Corporate Council on Africa \nNatalie Hanson\, Principal and CEO\, Textile Trade Solutions \nModerators \nMichelle Egan\, AU-SIS Professor; Co-Director\, Transatlantic Policy Center; and Global Fellow\, Wilson Center \nCarl LeVan\, AU-SIS Professor; Associate Researcher\, African Centre for the study of the United States; Editorial Board Member\, Journal of Modern African Studies \n \nFor more information\, please visit https://edspace.american.edu/sisintrade/2025-conference/

SUMMARY:Bills\, Budgets\, & Brawls: Understanding Taiwan’s Legislative Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sigur Center as we discuss the current situation in Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan\n\n\nAbout the Event \nTaiwan’s Legislative Yuan has long been characterized by intense partisan competition\, high-stakes negotiations\, and\, at times\, dramatic confrontations. Recent legislative crises—including controversial cuts and freezes to the operating budgets of several ministries—have highlighted the complex interplay between budgetary politics\, institutional constraints\, and evolving party dynamics\, raising critical questions about the resilience and functionality of Taiwan’s democratic system and constitutional order. At the same time\, civil society groups\, open-government advocates\, and civic tech communities in Taiwan have played active roles in developing participatory mechanisms and transparency tools meant to enhance public engagement and citizen oversight in legislative affairs\, but face a variety of resource and outreach constraints. The current legislative dilemma may also have substantial impacts on Taiwan’s diplomatic\, national security\, and geoeconomic efforts during a time of critical international exposure. \nTo address these timely and salient topics\, please join the Sigur Center for Asian Studies for a panel discussion that brings together leading experts and practitioners to analyze the roots and ramifications of Taiwan’s ongoing legislative turbulence. SUMMARY:The Real Life GULAG
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear Vladimir Kara-Murza speak about his experience of the Russian Gulag.\n\n\nJoin us for our new speaker series “Russia: In Search of a New Paradigm — Conversations With Yevgenia Albats” to hear Vladimir Kara-Murza speak with our eminent host about his experience of the Russian Gulag. \nA Cambridge University-trained historian\, Vladimir Kara-Murza\, came to Russian political activism as a protégé of the late Boris Nemtsov. Kara-Murza has become known as a promoter of the Magnitsky Act aimed at punishing the corrupted Russian judges\, prosecutors\, and policemen. In April 2022\, he was arrested in Moscow; a year later\, in April of 2023\, he was sentenced on trump-up charges to 25 years in the Russian maximum-security prison. He spent eleven months in solitary confinement in the Siberian prison and never expected himself to get out alive. By pure miracle and lots of efforts on the side of American and German diplomats\, he was released from prison on the biggest prisoners’ swamp ever on August 1\, 2024\, and deported to Germany. A long-time contributing columnist with the Washington Post\, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for commentary while still in prison. Vladimir Kara-Murza comes to Harvard to tell his story. \nThese are but some of the topics to be discussed in what promises to be an in-depth\, informative conversation. Please explore the other planned talks in the series in our Events listing.
