SUMMARY:Kitty Stryker on Sustaining Your Activism: Standing Up Without Falling Down
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 27\, meet others interested in activism\, and maybe even have dinner afterward at a nearby restaurant!\n\n\nBalancing activism with personal life and relationships can be difficult. At this crucial time in our history\, activists are burning out when we need them the most. That’s why this event with Kitty Stryker\, who has spent two decades as a direct activist and a street medic during radical actions\, is so timely. \nStryker\, author of Love Rebels: How I Learned to Burn It Down Without Burning Out\, has both burned it down and burned herself out. Trying to “show up bravely” as a leader despite exhaustion\, she almost destroyed herself. \nBut now she says\, “Activism does not demand martyrdom to be effective … it’s important to have some fun together!” She’ll show us how to build effective teams composed of people with different backgrounds\, interests\, and abilities\, while managing the inevitable internal conflicts. She will discuss how to inspire powerful action while keeping the team safe\, how to nurture yourself and others while staying in the fight\, how to make your most effective contribution\, and how to decide when you truly need to take a break. \nSo join us on January 27\, meet others interested in activism\, and maybe even have dinner afterward at a nearby restaurant! \nAbout the Speaker \nKitty Stryker is the author of Love Rebels: How I Learned to Burn It Down Without Burning Out\, three books on consent\, and articles about activism and politics. She founded the Ladies High Tea and Pornography Society in London and has been a radical activist since she was ten. \nSPEAKERS \nKitty Stryker\, Author\, Love Rebels: How I Learned to Burn It Down Without Burning Out \nModerator: Eric Siegel\, Chair\, Personal Growth Member-led Forum\, Commonwealth Club World Affairs of California \n5 p.m. doors open\, check-in & reception5:30–6:30 p.m program6:30 p.m. discussion & book signing(all times Pacific Time) \nPhoto by Avens O’Brien; courtesy the speaker.

Or to advance your politicalbeliefs through ethical\, constructive civic action? (Many of us feel drawn to both.)* Your ideas for 2026 conversations in the East Metro Alliance — What topics should BraverAngels in Minnesota be creating space for as we head into this election year? \nYou don’t need to be an expert\, an activist\, or even particularly optimistic. SUMMARY:The Race for Governor 2026: Betty Yee
DESCRIPTION:Come meet the candidate\, hear her vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next Governor.\n\n\nAs former state controller and budget director\, Betty Yee oversaw California’s finances—drawing on skills she first developed as a child helping run her family’s small business. Today\, she says she’s running for California governor to address the affordability crisis while bringing more transparent\, effective governance to Sacramento. \nYee grew up in San Francisco\, the daughter of Chinese immigrants who ran a dry cleaning shop. She worked her way through UC Berkeley and earned a master’s degree from Golden Gate University\, all while caring for her father during his illness—an experience she says shaped her views on health-care access. \nWhile serving as the top budget official under Governor Gray Davis\, she pushed for wage protections for home healthcare workers and helped implement California’s pioneering automobile emissions standards. During her two terms as controller\, Yee says she identified billions in wasteful government spending\, safeguarded pension funds for public employees and teachers\, and resisted federal attempts to open protected coastal areas to oil exploration. \nYee joins Commonwealth Club World Affairs as part of our “Race for Governor 2026” series of candidate forums. Come meet the candidate\, hear her vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next Governor. \nNotes \nAttendees subject to search. SUMMARY:Shadi Hamid: The Case for American Power
DESCRIPTION:Hamid says that America\, as a democracy\, has the ability to correct past mistakes and change for the better—and that part is up to all of us\n\n\nIs the United States still the “indispensable nation\,” former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s term to describe America’s leading role in the world? Or is the world better off as the country turns inward and downplays its historic alliances? \nWashington Post columnist Shari Hamid has made his own journey\, moving from opposition to America’s role in the world to reluctantly embracing it. He says the alternative to American leadership isn’t a morally perfect superpower—it’s the brutal authoritarianism of countries like China and Russia. He explores this topic in his new book The Case for American Power\, and he comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to make the case for America to embrace its power as the only moral option in a world beset by tragedy. \nDrawing on his unique perspective as both an American and a Muslim who came of age in the shadow of the September 11 attacks\, Hamid contends with the contradictions of American power: how a nation founded on moral purpose so often does not live up to its ideals. He also deals with America’s failures\, from the war in Iraq to support for authoritarian regimes across the Middle East. But he says that because America is a democracy\, it has the ability to correct past mistakes and change for the better—and that part is up to all of us. \nSPEAKERS \nShadi Hamid\, Columnist\, The Washington Post; Author\, The Case for American Power \nIn conversation with Steven Saum\, Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Content\, Saint Mary’s College \n5:30 p.m. doors open & check-in6–7 p.m. program7 p.m. book signing(all times Pacific Time) \nPhoto by Paul Morigi; courtesy the speaker.

SUMMARY:Emily Feng: Identity and Belonging in Xi Jinping's China
DESCRIPTION:Feng reveals dramatic human stories of resistance & survival in a country that is increasingly closing itself off to the world.\n\n\nChina’s president\, Xi Jinping\, has become the most all-powerful leader of the communist state since Mao\, and his grip on the country has been strengthened by technology and China’s growing economic and military might. The United States might have belatedly realized it was in a great-powers competition with the People’s Republic\, but we might still be failing to understand how Chinese people themselves are dealing with—and resisting—their authoritarian government. \nAward-winning journalist Emily Feng\, author of the new book Let Only Red Flowers Bloom\, has documented China’s state oppression of those who fail to conform to Xi Jinping’s definition of who is “Chinese.” She has profiled nearly two dozen people who are pushing back. They include a Uyghur family\, separated as China detains hundreds of thousands of their fellow Uyghurs in camps; human rights lawyers fighting to defend civil liberties in the face of incredible odds; a teacher from Inner Mongolia forced to make hard choices because of his support of his mother tongue; and a Hong Kong fugitive trying to find a new home and live in freedom. \nJoin us as Feng reveals dramatic human stories of resistance and survival in a country that is increasingly closing itself off to the world—even as it flexes its muscles on the world stage. Feng illustrates what it is like to run against the grain in China\, and the myriad ways people are trying to survive\, with dignity. \nSPEAKERS \nEmily Feng\, International Correspondent for NPR; Author\, Let Only Red Flowers Bloom: Identity and Belonging in Xi Jinping’s China \nModerator TBA \n5 p.m. doors open & check-in5:30–6:30 p.m. program6:30 p.m. book signing(all times Pacific Time) \nPhoto by An Rong Xu; courtesy the speaker.
