SUMMARY:The Remote Revolution: Drones and Modern Statecraft
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on how drones are reshaping modern politics and warfare.\n\n\nIn The Remote Revolution\, Erik Lin-Greenberg shows that drones are rewriting the rules of international security—but not in ways one would expect. Emerging technologies like drones are often believed to increase the likelihood of crises and war. By lowering the potential risks and human costs of military operations\, they encourage decision-makers to deploy military force. Yet as Lin-Greenberg contends\, operations involving drones are in fact less likely to evolve into broader\, more intense conflicts than similar operations involving traditionally crewed assets. Even as drones increase the frequency of conflict\, the decreased costs of their operations reduces the likelihood of conflict escalation. Lin-Greenberg’s findings demonstrate that drones are far less destabilizing than commonly argued. Drones add rungs to the proverbial “escalation ladder” and\, in doing so\, have brought about a fundamental change—a revolution—in the character of statecraft.

SUMMARY:Reading Sterne in Stalin's Russia
DESCRIPTION:This talk discusses the critical juncture in the Russian reception of author Laurence Sterne.\n\n\nThis talk discusses the 1920s and 1930s as a critical juncture in the Russian reception of Laurence Sterne\, the author of Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey. Drawing on extensive archival research\, the book traces how an eighteenth-century Yorkshire writer was read and admired within an increasingly totalitarian society\, and places these encounters within their biographical\, cultural\, and institutional settings. The talk shows how Sterne’s whimsical world—so alien to the Bolshevik vision of society—became\, precisely through this incongruity\, a revealing lens on early Soviet cultural life.

SUMMARY:Bill Gurley: Thriving in a Career You Actually Love
DESCRIPTION:How can you avoid career regret? What can people at the top of their fields teach you about loving what they do? Hurley is your guide.\n\n\nIf you believe life is a use-it-or-lose-it situation\, should you try to spend it doing something you love? Venture capitalist Bill Gurley has set out to teach people his ideas for how to find your dream job and avoid a career you’ll hate. \nFor lots of young people\, career paths feel like conveyor belts—the next test\, the next application\, the next college—without a pause to ask what they really want to do with their lives.
