SUMMARY:Baker Briefing Live: Population Decline and the New Economics of Cities
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a deep dive into how cities are changing as populations shift.\n\n\nThe world is facing a quiet but transformative challenge: depopulation. As birth rates decline\, populations age\, and migration patterns shift\, the impacts will be felt across almost every aspect of human existence\, from housing markets and tax bases to workforce stability\, public safety\, infrastructure planning\, geopolitics\, education\, and long-term economic competitiveness. \nJoin us for a live recording of the Baker Institute’s flagship podcast\, “Baker Briefing\,” to explore depopulation and its implications. Ambassador David M. Satterfield will be joined by Fellow Bill King from the Center for Tax and Budget Policy to examine how demographic trends may reshape policymaking and what leaders can do now to plan responsibly for the future. \nAll attendees who are members of the Baker Roundtable (or who join by February 17\, 2026) will receive a complimentary copy of Bill King’s new book\, “Depopulation: Our New Demographics Reality.” A reception and book signing will take place prior to the conversation. \nFollow @BakerInstitute on X to join the conversation online with #BakerLive.

SUMMARY:Human Rights Series: Identity Politics vs. Citizenship
DESCRIPTION:What should unite us? Cynthia Fleury and Mark Lilla in conversation\n\n\nIn English \nIn Partnership with LICRA\, USA (League Against Racism and Antisemitism) the first event of La Maison Francaise of NYU’s Human Rights series presents a conversation between Mark Lilla and Philosopher Cynthia Fleury. \nOver the past two decades\, identity politics has dominated the political discourse\, ending an era that had prioritized multiculturalism and post-racial values. Defined by race\, religions\, gender\, sexual orientation\, powerful groups have emerged who fight for their respective rights\, ones that don’t necessarily intersect nor reflect the collective good. \nSome see this social construct as incompatible with the existence of a functional and responsible citizenry that they believe requires the acceptance of shared civic rights and duties\, including reciprocal civic responsibility and respect for the majority. Other critics posit that the unifying factor for those who seek greater justice should not be identity but rather common economic goals . \nAt a time when societies are increasingly fractured and polarized\, two remarkable experts will offer their views on what values – old and new – a society should prioritize to best address inequalities and legitimate grievances without eroding the universal\, civic framework that makes democratic citizenship possible.
