SUMMARY:The Race for Governor 2026: Betty Yee
DESCRIPTION:Come meet the candidate\, hear her vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next Governor.\n\n\nAs former state controller and budget director\, Betty Yee oversaw California’s finances—drawing on skills she first developed as a child helping run her family’s small business. Today\, she says she’s running for California governor to address the affordability crisis while bringing more transparent\, effective governance to Sacramento. \nYee grew up in San Francisco\, the daughter of Chinese immigrants who ran a dry cleaning shop. She worked her way through UC Berkeley and earned a master’s degree from Golden Gate University\, all while caring for her father during his illness—an experience she says shaped her views on health-care access. \nWhile serving as the top budget official under Governor Gray Davis\, she pushed for wage protections for home healthcare workers and helped implement California’s pioneering automobile emissions standards. During her two terms as controller\, Yee says she identified billions in wasteful government spending\, safeguarded pension funds for public employees and teachers\, and resisted federal attempts to open protected coastal areas to oil exploration. \nYee joins Commonwealth Club World Affairs as part of our “Race for Governor 2026” series of candidate forums. Come meet the candidate\, hear her vision for California\, and ask your questions before you cast your vote for California’s next Governor. \nNotes \nAttendees subject to search. SUMMARY:Shadi Hamid: The Case for American Power
DESCRIPTION:Hamid says that America\, as a democracy\, has the ability to correct past mistakes and change for the better—and that part is up to all of us\n\n\nIs the United States still the “indispensable nation\,” former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s term to describe America’s leading role in the world? Or is the world better off as the country turns inward and downplays its historic alliances? \nWashington Post columnist Shari Hamid has made his own journey\, moving from opposition to America’s role in the world to reluctantly embracing it. He says the alternative to American leadership isn’t a morally perfect superpower—it’s the brutal authoritarianism of countries like China and Russia. He explores this topic in his new book The Case for American Power\, and he comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to make the case for America to embrace its power as the only moral option in a world beset by tragedy. \nDrawing on his unique perspective as both an American and a Muslim who came of age in the shadow of the September 11 attacks\, Hamid contends with the contradictions of American power: how a nation founded on moral purpose so often does not live up to its ideals. He also deals with America’s failures\, from the war in Iraq to support for authoritarian regimes across the Middle East. But he says that because America is a democracy\, it has the ability to correct past mistakes and change for the better—and that part is up to all of us. \nSPEAKERS \nShadi Hamid\, Columnist\, The Washington Post; Author\, The Case for American Power \nIn conversation with Steven Saum\, Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Content\, Saint Mary’s College \n5:30 p.m. doors open & check-in6–7 p.m. program7 p.m. book signing(all times Pacific Time) \nPhoto by Paul Morigi; courtesy the speaker.
