SUMMARY:Generational Perspectives on Georgian Politics
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar on the disruptive political patterns apparent since independence\, and what this means for Georgia today.\n\n\nTedo Japaridze and Gabriel Chubinidze discuss Georgia’s changing generational values and their impact on almost thirty-five years of Georgian independence. Is the deep political polarization in Georgia today generational? In what ways do evaluations of the Georgian revolutions of the last three and a half decades differ among Georgia’s youth and the country’s older generations? To what degree do the legacies of protest\, conflict\, and power continue to impact public debate today? This webinar brings together Ambassador Tedo Japaridze\, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and National Security Advisor to President Eduard Shevardnadze with Gabriel Chubinidze\, graduate student\, historian and political commentator\, for a conversation on the disruptive political patterns apparent in Georgian politics since independence\, and what this means for Georgia’s leaders and citizenry today. Can democratic citizenship survive in a time of such moral and institutional fatigue? Is there a new generation waiting in the wings? Can it shape politics differently? \nThe webinar will conclude with a moderated Q&A session inviting reflections on the future of political life in Georgia.

SUMMARY:Capitol Hill Luncheon: Eating Ourselves Sick? (December 10)
DESCRIPTION:Join Tufts and Food Tank on Capitol Hill for a bipartisan look at how ultra-processed foods shape U.S. health and what we can do.\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, December 10th\, we invite you to join the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University and Food Tank on Capitol Hill for a timely luncheon conversation about one of the biggest public health challenges of our time: ultra-processed foods. \nUltra-processed foods (UPF) now make up more than half of the calories consumed in the United States. Mounting evidence links UPF to rising rates of obesity\, diabetes\, cardiovascular disease\, and even premature death. At the same time\, these foods are deeply embedded in school meals\, federal nutrition programs\, and the daily diets of millions of Americans. \nThis bipartisan gathering will explore what UPF really are\, what the science tells us about their health impacts\, and how state and federal policymakers are beginning to respond. This is a rare opportunity to engage directly with leaders shaping the future of food and health in the United States. \nDetailsCapitol Hill LuncheonEating Ourselves Sick? SUMMARY:The Euro-Pacific Nexus – U.S.-German collaboration in the Indo-Pacific
DESCRIPTION:Germany and the U.S. stand to gain from working together in the Indo-Pacific – as does the region on the whole.\n\n\nEuropean and Indo-Pacific security are inextricably linked. Indeed\, Germany’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific has been growing for years – a reflection of the region’s importance for Germany’s trading partners and shipping routes – and as laid out in its 2020 “Indo-Pacific Guidelines”. But with the war in Ukraine ushering in a new era of German and European defense policy\, the Indo-Pacific’s role in European security has increased significantly as well. Whether it is in protecting freedom of navigation\, strengthening resilience of Pacific Island States\, working with countries in the Indo-Pacific on their defense industrial base\, or confronting strategic competition in the region\, Germany and the U.S. stand to gain from working together – as does the region on the whole. Drawing on his diplomatic experience from serving in China\, Berlin and Washington D.C.\, Alex will discuss how the U.S. and Germany can align their strategic interests in the region – and where they might diverge. \nAlex Taylor-Fowles has worked on Indo-Pacific Affairs for the German Embassy in Washington D.C. since July 2024. Before joining the Embassy\, Alex served for one year as the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellow in the U.S. Department of State\, first in the Bureau for European and Eurasian Affairs\, and then in China House\, where he supported the expansion of the Strategic Communications team. Prior to his posting in Washington D.C.\, Alex served as Chief of Staff to the German government’s Commissioner for Human Rights and Humanitarian Assistance between 2020 and 2023\, in the foreign office’s headquarters in Berlin. Between 2017 and 2020\, he served as German’s Deputy Consul General in Chengdu\, China\, where he led the Consulate’s public diplomacy work\, as well as trade and economic affairs. From 2014-16\, he covered science diplomacy\, environmental and cyber issues at the Embassy in London. Alex holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Warwick and a master’s in environmental technology from Imperial College London\, where he won the award for best thesis. Before entering the foreign service\, he worked for several years in the private sector\, in business development\, communications and sustainability consulting. He is a 2023 Young Leader of the American Council on Germany.”
