SUMMARY:The Future of North American Trade and Economic Integration
DESCRIPTION:Join us to discuss the future of trade and economic integration in North America.\n\n\nNorth American relations are currently at a boiling point. The new administration under Donald J. Trump has disrupted trade and economic integration trends by imposing tariffs on its neighbors\, Mexico and Canada. This approach will reshape the rules of trade and economic dynamics of the region and those of the region with other parts of the world. However\, despite turmoil at the federal level\, the U.S.-Mexico border will likely continue to be a shining example of what integrated value chains can do for both countries. Some border economic regions\, such as Brownsville-Matamoros\, demonstrate that the historic economic integration between the U.S. and Mexico remains robust and largely unaffected by any of Mr. Trump’s executive orders. Even so\, the stakes are high for redefining North American cooperation\, and the common border should serve as the proverbial canary in the mineshaft for any real disruptions and future trends in the region’s trade and economic relationships. \nThis half-day conference will feature keynote speakers and panel discussions to forecast the future of North American trade and economic integration. It will also provide insights to help navigate these challenging times. A key highlight of the event will be the presentation of reports from a series of workshops held in Houston and Monterrey\, where industry leaders\, policymakers\, and economic experts examined the challenges of nearshoring—focusing on electricity\, human capabilities\, and infrastructure. \nThis event is sponsored by the Baker Institute Center for the U.S. and Mexico\, Tecnológico de Monterrey\, and The Nearshore Company. It is free and open to the public. \nFollow @BakerInstitute on X and join the conversation online with #BakerLive.

SUMMARY:The Future of Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:The Future of Higher Education\n\n\nHigher education is at a crossroads — while crucial to the health of our democracy and society\, it faces an uncertain and contested future. At this pivotal moment\, distinguished leaders and scholars at public universities and institutions come together in a provocative conversation. Our panel of experts considers important questions\, such as: Does the promise of higher education for the public good remain the top priority? How can we balance the commitment to a liberal arts and sciences education while also supporting preparedness for the workplace? How can institutions foster academic freedom\, equity\, and opportunity for all? Join us for a bold\, substantive discussion about public education and its futures. \n \nFeaturing Nancy Cantor\, president of Hunter College\, CUNY; Cathy N. Davidson\, distinguished professor at the CUNY Graduate Center\, founder of the Futures Initiative\, and special advisor to the CUNY chancellor; William P. Kelly\, president emeritus of the CUNY Graduate Center and former director of NYPL Research Libraries; Shelly Lowe\, chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities; and Maurice Wallace\, associate professor of English at Rutgers University. Moderated by Shelly Eversley\, professor of English at Baruch College and the CUNY Graduate Center\, and faculty co-chair of the Futures Initiative. \n \nPresented with the Futures Initiative and organized in celebration of its 10th anniversary.
